Queen Anne, the highest of Seattle’s famed hills, also represents one of the finer neighborhoods full of prime real estate. That’s because of a preponderance of huge old homes and mansions, craftsman bungalows galore, and four hillsides flanked with condos to capture the views on all sides of the hill.
Queen Anne begins just north of downtown’s fashionable Bell Town district, and boasts Seattle’s most famous icon – the Space Needle. Built as the beacon for the 1962 World’s Fair, the Space Needle lords over an everchanging landscape filled to the brim with two retail centers, nightclub action, ethnic restaurants, and the Seattle Center’s coterie of world class entertainment and major league sports.
Below the steep hill affectionately known as the counterbalance (from the days of street trolleys and the technology used to pull them up), Lower Queen Anne is dotted with new condominiums and old apartments converted into condos. Few houses remain standing here, and it sees dense car and foot traffic seven days a week due to its proximity to theaters and clubs. Since Queen Anne abuts the edge of downtown, it can get fairly hectic during commutes, especially if drivers try to avoid congested arterials and cut through the busy streets here.
Upper Queen Anne presents another picture entirely. Although the large suppermarkets and designer shops pepper the avenue, things move slower on top of the hill. CondoCompany recommends views that face west for sunsets, or the condominium units available on Queen Anne’s eastern flank. There, a highway between the hill and Lake Union makes quick commutes to and from downtown a snap. |
