Just after Interstate 90 leave’s Seattle’s Beacon Hill for its cross-country ride to Beacon Hill, Boston, it passes across and under Mercer Island, one of the wealthiest enclaves in all of Seattle’s metropolitan area.
Though fully incorporated as a city with 22,000 residents, for most locals Mercer Island represents quiet residential neighborhoods situated on real estate priced for the extremely upscale. Case in point, Microsoft’s co-founder Paul Allen makes his home here.
Known for its great school system and pricey homes, no one ever equates Mercer Island with an urban core, nightlife, or even condos.

Lake Washington provides 360-degree waterfront property around the island, so yachts and sea plane docks are not unusual, especially in the island’s average property – which at last check, goes for an amount just shy of a cool million.
