Along with Bellevue, Kirkland represents one of Seattle’s largest suburban enclaves on the east side of Lake Washington. Any Costco shopper will recognize the name – Costco leveraged the “Kirkland” name for their house brand, found on innumerable products in their warehouse stores, from this area where the first Costco was built.
While the availability of vast swaths of suburban real estate has made Kirkland almost synonymous with big box stores, especially those catering to the software and hardware industries that populate Seattle’s east side, Kirkland certainly has more going for it than oversize retail giants.
On the waterfront in the center of town, quaint cafes and upscale boutique restaurants and bars are the rule. Nightlife prospers with the wealth of condominiums which attract the young and the well heeled. Tour boats launch from the pier, which also sees more than its fair share of deluxe motor yachts and sailboats owned by software company CEOs and investors who were able to survive the dot.com boom and bust and rebound.
Kirkland’s charming retail core that runs along Lake Washington Drive adjacent to the lake makes condo life a luxury. Some would agree that the waterfront parks and flashy architectural details of some of the condos lend a vacation-themed aire about this place, and city dwellers who cast aspersions about the outlying areas could stand to consider a second opinion.
Certainly, outer Kirkland turns more bland like any suburb criss-crossed by gigantic freeways with commuter traffic. And, so much of Kirkland exists solely to house bedroom communities and anonymous housing developments.
