If you took aim at a map of Seattle and landed a dart just to the left of dead center, you’d hit Fremont. That’s only one reason resident artists have tagged Fremont “The Center of the Universe,” as can be seen by street signs and humorous Entering and Leaving signposts at the edges of the community.
The southern border of this heavily sought after commercial and residential neighborhood that’s bursting with condos is the Lake Washington Ship Canal – effectively the waistline of the city at its narrowest point – which connects Lake Washington and nearby Lake Union to Puget Sound.
Fremont began as a rough and tumble mill town before the city built the Ship Canal early in the 20th century, but in modern times it has become colonized by artists and musicians looking for inexpensive studios and loft spaces. However, within the last 10 years, the exploding real estate market means that condos have sprouted up like daisies in the spring, taking full advantage of the central location only minutes from downtown, which lies a mere six miles away via car, bus, or bicycle.
Former factories, processing plants, and artists’ workshops underwent vast makeovers to appeal to young professionals in the software and biochemical corporations that define the Seattle landscape. Since Fremont largely consists of one vast steep hill that pours down to the Ship Canal’s waterfront, views from condos are coveted but widely available from any number of vantage points, especially the top floors of designer condominiums and efficiencies built to take advantage of this prime location.
The Burke-Gilman Bike Trail snakes along the Lake Washington Ship Canal on the former Burlington Northern rail bed, and the city expands the bike trail’s reach periodically. As of 2006, cyclists can easily pedal from Fremont to the University of Washington in short order, to outer suburbs fronting Lake Washington to the east, or to parks and beaches on Puget Sound to the west.
Restaurants of every stripe, especially those that feature Thai food, populate the intimate district in profusion. With the exception of the ubiquitous Starbucks, you’ll find few chain stores on these streets. Instead, local entrepreneurs and craftspeople market exotic antiques, homemade microbrews, designer clothing, and other boutique items to appeal to the new demographic.
Each year in June, one of Seattle’s oldest and most unusual street fairs takes Fremont by storm. The opening event of the Fremont Fair includes human-powered floats, marching bands and musicians, stinging political satire, and dozens of bicyclists – most wearing nothing but body paint or elaborate headgear.
For all of these reasons, condo owners and renters stand to benefit in the best way with their investment, and CondoCompany can set you up with the material you need to make the right decisions. |
