As the real estate market in Seattle reached record levels of activity by the late 90s and well into the new millennium, Seattle’s historic Ballard neighborhood took root as one of the only affordable locales to buy a home or condo.

They offer Swedish candies, gifts, even lutefisk – a questionable delicacy of fermented cod that’s best left for those of Scandinavian descent.
By 2001, Ballard transformed itself into a major destination for professionals and hipsters alike. Developers of condos could hardly keep pace with demand once consumers realized the neighborhood combined an attractive history with a reasonable proximity to Seattle’s downtown, which is only 15 minutes away by car.
Two notable sites that make Ballard such a precious gem for those in search of affordable condos include Golden Gardens park, an expansive beach and wooded trails on Shilshole Bay that resembles a perfect vacation destination, complete with a priceless view of the Olympic Mountains; and, Lake Washington Ship Canal’s Hiram Chittenden Locks, a major feat of engineering that allows industrial and recreational vessels to ply the waters between the Pacific Ocean and Lake Washington, which marks Seattle’s eastern border. It’s also a draw for tourists who flock here to watch the annual runs of salmon frantically passing through the adjacent fish ladders.
