Since the dot.com boom of the late 1990s, the shore along Duwamish Head and below West Seattle filled up with so many condominiums and other real estate development Alki began to resemble a mini Miami Beach.
The road to Alki winds along the water of Elliott Bay and past the expanding reach of industrial Port of Seattle activity. The route affords drop dead gorgeous views of Seattle’s skyline just as it approaches Alki Beach. Here, the first European settlers came ashore to meet Chief Sealth and the rest of his Duwamish tribe. Now, Alki Beach has become a mecca for summertime fun for all ages because of the sand, the water, and continually dry summers. Naturally, it makes the place plum for condos of all stripes and for any serious real estate investor.
Condos in Alki all have fine views, since the building plots line only one side of the street right against a hillside. Most buildings generally top off at four stories due to zoning requirements. The result is a tightly packed community that does have a small, but not insurmountable, traffic problem.
Snaking between the road and the water, a well maintained bicycle trail leads from the container yards by the Duwamish River, to Alki Beach and just around the point – where the Coast Guard has a station and lighthouse. Just a bit further is Constellation Beach – rough and rocky but a fine place to look for sea stars and other creatures during low tides.
From the stretches of beach and on a clear day, when it’s possible to see Mt. Baker near the border with Canada, no one thinks about real estate prices or the congested summer crowds. They think about having one of the best front yards in all of Seattle. |
